Extra Wide Fabric FAQs
Extra wide fabric is woven on specially designed wider looms to create broader widths of cloth, allowing for larger, uninterrupted fabric panels. It is made using the same natural fibres and considered weaving processes as our standard-width fabrics, with a focus on preserving texture, character and elegant drape on a larger scale.
Extra wide fabrics are generally woven at significantly greater widths than standard interior fabrics. Many of our extra wide fabrics are between 280cm and 320cm wide, making them particularly well suited to wide windows, long drops and large-scale curtaining applications.
Extra wide fabrics are most commonly used for curtaining, where their generous width helps create seamless, elegant window treatments. Depending on the fabric's construction and performance characteristics, some designs may also be suitable for soft furnishings and upholstery applications. The increased width of extra wide fabrics allows for fewer seams, creating a cleaner and more seamless appearance. This can enhance the overall flow of curtains and make large-scale installations more visually refined. Extra wide fabrics can also offer additional design flexibility, particularly with patterned designs, allowing different fabric orientations to achieve a desired visual effect.
Railroading refers to rotating a fabric so that its width runs in the direction of the finished application rather than its length. This technique is often used with extra wide fabrics to reduce seams and alter the orientation of a pattern. For example, a horizontal stripe may be railroaded to create a vertical stripe effect on curtains.
Extra wide fabric is typically cut to maximise its width and minimise joins, helping to maintain the continuity and natural drape of the cloth. For larger projects, professional makers and workrooms will often plan cutting layouts carefully to ensure patterns, grain lines and fabric alignment are maintained throughout the finished installation.
